Oh no! You poor thing, what a huge drag. Luckily we have a place to store our camper in Saanich but if we didn't, I'd park it square in the middle of my lawn. Related: I was parked across from my son's school for TEN MINUTES the other day and two of my tires were past the end of the sidewalk and someone called city hall and complained. Awesome! $75 for "impeding the flow of traffic on the sidewalk" or some such nonsense. I talked the ticket guy out of it but he was pretty furious that I'd have the big fat nerve to park PARTIALLY ON A SIDEWALK WHERE NO ONE EVER WALKS. Hysterically, the sidewalk ended at my car so really, I impeded the flow of pedestrian traffic by about six inches. They had to step off at that point anyway. Oak Bay, FTW! I think I'd move before I'd renovate... I can't imagine the hassle. I had a friend who needed a variance on the slope of their garage roof and it went back and forth in council for so long they finally moved.

I just had to google to see if anyone else feels my pain. We've been thinking of renovating our little bungalow in Oak Bay, but I think it would be cheaper have a demolition party and start over again than to meet all of Oak Bay's building codes and bylaws. But I digress...

Just got a personal visit from a bylaw officer today because not only do we offend Oak Bay's finer sensibilities by owning a tent trailer, we also had the audacity to leave it parked in the corner of our DOUBLE DRIVEWAY next to a 12 FOOT HEDGE. To avoid the fine, I have until Tuesday to take down my fence and move my gardens, so the trailer will fit beside the house, thus taking up the entire side access. You see, not only do we offend by owning said trailer, but also by owning a house on too small a lot. The space cannot be considered a "driveway" because it is too narrow for Oak Bay (another stupid bylaw -- the required 10x17' covered parking), and we can't fit the trailer in our little 1940 garage...

Our neighbour cut the wall out of the back of his garage, so he can push his trailer through, so as not to offend...maybe I could just cut a chunk out of my house.

The officer also told me, in passing, 'cause he was in a chatty mood, that my deck isn't to code and would have to be taken down at some point and that our driveway was too wide. I think by then I was taking the "smile and wave boys, smile and wave" approach to dealing with the situation. Besides, I was still reeling from the CRD NOTICE OF VIOLATION I received this morning because one of my ardent neighbours let them know that I watered my trees at 10:33 on a Sunday. 10:33?? Who cares that much? Only in Oak Bay...

On Gabriola, if it's not fire season, I can burn trash on my front lawn. If I dance naked around the flames, I can probably get a grant. I used to have a house governed by a neighbourhood association. This was in Texas. I could have shot an intruder deaddeadead, but paint my house anything but beige? Nuh-uh.

Hey, we're in Saanich and have not only a trailer in our yard, but also an uninsured vehicle! clearly too white trash for the upper crust lifestyle of Oak Bay! In Saanich we have less hassle, but on the other hand, we don't have sidewalks in some spots where you need them... oh, and parks projects take 4ever.

Clearly it's time you moved to Saanich. More trees, better by-laws, still close enough to downtown that commuting is not an issue.

You tell 'em. But it's probably our fault for moving our white trash arses into this high-falutin' neighbourhood anyway.
