• I write books.

I do! It's true. I have written for all sorts of different audiences. My first book was literary adult fiction and I've written many many books that have fallen into the category "juvenile fiction" and "YA fiction". I talk about my books and writing in general on my other site, which is at www.karenrivers.com. (I don't know how to make that a live link, so you may have to copy and paste.) (Sorry.) THIS site is about me, my hair, my kids, my appliances, and that time that I rode my bike down a cliff and then got stung by a bee. It may not all be appropriately awesome (or even slightly interesting) to kids, so if you are young, LOOK AWAY. That said, there is nothing harmful here, except the occasional swear, which I ask you to edit out with your eyes. Blink blink.

  • Is it safe to eat raw bacon?

No. You shouldn't eat any raw pork products. You could get trichinosis and no doubt a number of other food-borne illnesses. With the recent change in food safety standards, I'd frankly cook the crap out of any meat product I purchased before eating it. Even if it's already cooked. Seriously. Keep in mind that I am not a raw bacon expert, I just play one on the web.

Five Books for Preschoolers that Will Make You Sob Like The Big Baby That You Really Are On the Inside.

These books will make you cry. Sometimes that’s not a bad thing. Sort of like a bruise that hurts when you push on it, you might find yourself reaching for one on a day when you think, “Nothing will spice up story time tonight more than if Mummy starts crying so hard she has to [...]

The Seventh Circle of Hell, or How To Spend More Than You Wanted To Spend On A Washing Machine And Dryer That Make People Want To Off Themselves.

Last week, while Clayton was out of town, our dryer caught fire and did not ignite the entire house, burning us all to cinders. We were not really at risk of burning as we were at the beach watching the poor baby elephant seal being gawked at by the crowd, which included us, making us [...]

Five Random Things I Love.

This is about things. Actual material goods. Items. Stuff. I know we’re all shopping less, but you don’t have to actually buy something to love it. I sort of did buy these things though. They are good things. I would run away to Vegas with this stuff and marry it if I had time and [...]

The Bun is Four.

Dear Bun*: I can’t believe you are four years old. I meant to write you a letter every month from the moment you were born, a record of our life together (or my perspective of our life together) but then damn it if I didn’t just get so BUSY after you came along. How did [...]

Working on it…

I’m about to “relaunch”, a word that means nothing to anyone except me as it pertains to this blog. I’m just fiddling with design and pages and soon … very soon … this blog will emerge from its chrysalis and become… well, more of an actual entity. I hope. Stay tuned… In the meantime, please [...]
