• I write books.

I do! It's true. I have written for all sorts of different audiences. My first book was literary adult fiction and I've written many many books that have fallen into the category "juvenile fiction" and "YA fiction". I talk about my books and writing in general on my other site, which is at www.karenrivers.com. (I don't know how to make that a live link, so you may have to copy and paste.) (Sorry.) THIS site is about me, my hair, my kids, my appliances, and that time that I rode my bike down a cliff and then got stung by a bee. It may not all be appropriately awesome (or even slightly interesting) to kids, so if you are young, LOOK AWAY. That said, there is nothing harmful here, except the occasional swear, which I ask you to edit out with your eyes. Blink blink.

  • Is it safe to eat raw bacon?

No. You shouldn't eat any raw pork products. You could get trichinosis and no doubt a number of other food-borne illnesses. With the recent change in food safety standards, I'd frankly cook the crap out of any meat product I purchased before eating it. Even if it's already cooked. Seriously. Keep in mind that I am not a raw bacon expert, I just play one on the web.

The Post About The Eye Doctor And The Gas Leak.

As you’ve probably guessed from the clever title of this post, I went to the eye doctor on Monday. That’s not really newsworthy, except it is in my world, where remembering to go to the eye doctor is a semi-big deal because it indicates that maybe my memory is starting to return. [...]

I know! Go figure.

A bunch of my picture links are broken. Why? Is the universe telling me that it’s creepy to post pictures of my kids? Anyway, I know the links are broken but I’m too tired to fix them because that’s how it is — by the time I sit down [...]

I don’t care what people think, but sometimes what they say can haunt me for the rest of my life.

So I was thinking about this today while I was working in the garden. It was a nice afternoon, sunny and quiet. Quiet because the kids were out with Clayton and sunny because, well, the sun was out. Obviously. I am the master of a descriptive setting. [...]

I don’t want to write this post. Or “Shocking Secret Facts of Childbirth that No One Will Ever Tell You”.

I’m reading Heather Armstrong’s book, It sucked and then I cried. That’s the title of the book, the book itself doesn’t suck, or doesn’t suck so far. I can’t really judge it fairly as I’m only on about page 10 because for some reason every time I pick the book up, [...]

Spuddling along gracefully, 5.

I have a longer post to write but no time this morning, I’ll try to do it later tonight, I promise. I promise, as though you care, as though you are actively wondering what gem I will post next and when already. I know, I know! I’m on it!
But [...]

Yes, It’s Another Actual Transcript.

Tucking The Bun into bed at night always brings on a manic frenzy of “I love you, Mummy, I LOVE YOU I LOVE YOU I LOVE YOU.” Which I know is a delay tactic, but hey, after a long day, a few “I love you”s go a long, long way.
Two nights ago, this is [...]

The Green Jacket Miracle And Some Other Stuff.

Yesterday The Birdy and The Bun woke up sounding like baby seals on an ice floe barking an SOS to The Universe. Using my excellent Mummy instincts, I flashed back to last year when The Birdy — sounding similar — accompanied me on a doctor’s appointment for something unrelated, and was instantly diagnosed [...]

Spuddling along gracefully, 4.

Time for another one of these, methinks.
1. It’s a beautiful day. That’s got to count for something, right? We’re off to go kite-flying in the park while doing laundry at my Mum’s house. Because no, we still do not have a washer and dryer that is attached in [...]

When there aren’t enough words.

Some terrible things have happened this week in the blogosphere, though these things happened in the real sphere, in real life. I feel both like I ought not to write about them because there are so many who were closer to these people and their losses that on one level, I feel like it’s [...]

Hey, guess what? There’s an Eighth Circle.

I woke up today — oh, wait, that part’s not even true! I’m starting this post with a terrible lie! Because if I say “I woke up” then that would mean I’d been asleep. But I had not. Nope. Not me. That [...]
